Where to stay in Milos

Where to stay in Milos

Milos feels bigger and more diverse than it looks on the map. You have lively port towns, quiet fishing village or Syrmata, dramatic cliffs, and sandy family beaches, often just a short drive apart. The first decision is whether you want to stay near the main port (Adamas), in a relaxed beach village (Pollonia), in a wild coastal area (Paliochori or Agia Kyriaki), or close to the traditional hilltop village of Plaka.

If you have only 2–3 days and want to explore the best things to do in Milos, staying near Adamas makes everything easy. With 5–7 days, it’s worth splitting your time between Adamas or Plaka and a quieter beach spot like Pollonia or Paliochori so you experience both the island’s energy and its more remote side.

If you are coming solely for the beach, you can look for a location near Milos’s most beautiful beaches.

Adamas: the convenient port hub

Adamas (also written Adamantas) is Milos’ main port and the practical heart of the island. Ferries arrive here, most boat tours depart from here, and you’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafés, rental car agencies, and shops all within walking distance. If you’re visiting Milos without a car, Adamas is easily the best base: buses connect from here to popular beaches like Sarakiniko, Pollonia and Paliochori, and many tours include port pickup.

Why stay in Adamas

  • You want to be close to the port, nightlife and boat tours for Kleftiko.
  • You prefer walking to dinner to O’ Hamos or the restaurants at the port rather than driving everywhere at night.
  • You want to visit the Mining museum.
  • You’ll find supermarkets there such as Masoutis or the superb Artemis bakery.

Best hotels in Adamas

  • Santa Maria Village Resort & Spa – A stylish resort just outside the center, with a pool, hydromassage jets, and sea views, yet still close enough to walk into town. Ideal if you want a quiet, resort feel but don’t want to be isolated from restaurants and the port.

Pollonia: relaxed beach village in the north

Pollonia (Apollonia) is one of Milos’ prettiest seaside villages, on the northeast of the island. It feels much more laid‑back than Adamas, with a small sandy beach, a handful of excellent tavernas and cafés, and boat trips to nearby Kimolos. It’s an especially good base for couples, families who prefer quiet, and anyone planning day trips to the island’s northern and eastern beaches.

Paliochori & Agia Kyriaki: wild south‑coast beaches

On the south coast, Paliochori and nearby Agia Kyriaki feel more remote and dramatic than Adamas or Pollonia. Here you get colorful cliffs, clear water and a more “wild” beach setting, with a few tavernas and beach bars but far fewer buildings. The area suits travelers who want a nature‑focused escape and don’t mind driving to explore other parts of the island.

Mandrakia, Sarakiniko & the north coast

The north coast is where you find some of Milos’ most iconic scenery: the moon‑like white rocks of Sarakiniko and the tiny fishing villages of Mandrakia and Firopotamos. There are fewer hotels and services here than around Adamas or Pollonia, but the setting is spectacular.

Why would you stay on the north coast of Milos

  • Sarakiniko beach is your must‑see and you want to be nearby for sunrise or sunset.
  • You love photography and dramatic landscapes.
  • You prefer a quiet base and don’t mind driving to restaurants in Adamas or Plaka, although you can find the lovely Medusa restaurant in Mandrakia

Stay in a traditional Syrmata house

What is a syrmata house in Milos?

Syrmata are traditional fishermen’s houses built right at the water’s edge in small coastal villages like Klima, Mandrakia and Firopotamos. Historically, they were partly carved into the volcanic rock and designed with a wide ground‑floor opening where fishermen could drag their boats inside to protect them from winter storm. This is where the name “syrmata” comes from, linked to the wires or cables used to haul the boats.

Typically, the boat garage occupied the lower level, while the family lived above in a simple, whitewashed room with brightly painted doors and shutters, often using leftover boat paint. Today, many syrmata are still in use by local fishing families, while others have been carefully converted into small holiday homes, allowing visitors to stay literally a few steps from the sea and wake up to waves lapping at their doorstep.

The best syrmata houses to book in Milos

Fisherman’s Syrma House sits directly on the water in the quiet area of Pachaina, in northern Milos, and is one of the most loved syrmata stays on the island. This small, whitewashed house has a terrace almost touching the sea, giving you your own little slice of coastline where you can swim from the rocks, watch sunsets and fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

In Klima, the most iconic syrmata village on Milos, Blue Horizon Syrma offers a fully renovated boathouse right on the shoreline, with the entrance and terrace opening directly onto the water.

Sunset Klima Boathouse is another standout syrma in Klima, known for its direct waterfront position and, as the name suggests, its spectacular sunset views. It has a balcony hanging over the sea, and charming traditional details are kept in the renovation. The easy access to both the small beach and the narrow lane of syrmata houses that make Klima so photogenic is extra.

Adding one of these syrmata stays to your Milos itinerary is an amazing way to turn one or two nights into a highlight of your trip, especially if you combine it with a base in Adamas or Plaka for the rest of your stay.

Plaka & central Milos: traditional villages and views

This is the area where we stayed during our travels to Milos. The oldest part is Plaka and Milos’ hilltop capital, set above Adamas with narrow streets, whitewashed houses and beautiful sunset views toward the bay. The central area around Plaka and Tripiti is close to the Ancient Theater and the island’s catacombs.

Why stay near Plaka

  • You love wandering through traditional streets in the evening.
  • You’re happy to drive to beaches but want a charming “village base.”
  • You enjoy sunset viewpoints and local tavernas over beachfront bars.

Best places to stay in Plaka

  • Civitas Milos – A stylish property praised for its views and helpful staff, within easy reach of both Plaka and Adamas. Good if you want to combine village charm with island‑wide exploring.
  • Solus Suites Milos – Modern suites with bikes available and a garden, well‑reviewed for their hosting and design. Perfect for travelers who like contemporary comforts but still want to feel close to traditional Milos life.
  • Plaka Suites Milos – Stay at Plaka Suites in Milos for the perfect blend of comfort and authentic island charm. With its elegant suites in the heart of picturesque Plaka, you’ll be just moments from sunset viewpoints, traditional restaurants and the best beaches on the island.

Camping in Milos

Camping on Milos is no longer straightforward: the main organized campsite at Achivadolimni has reportedly closed, and wild camping is generally restricted and risky. For a “close to nature” experience, it’s better to book a simple beachside studio or small guesthouse instead of relying on a campground.

Final thoughts on where to stay in Syros

Staying in Milos taught us that where you base yourself on the island really shapes your trip. We chose to stay close to Plaka and absolutely loved wandering the narrow streets at sunset.

That said, next time we’d seriously consider choosing an even quieter place. A traditional syrmata by the sea or a small stay around Adamas really appeals to us now that we’ve seen how easy it is to get around the island. Being able to step straight out to the water from a little fishermen’s house, or to walk from a calm bay into Adamas for dinner, feels like the best of both worlds: sea on your doorstep, but still close to the island’s main hub.

If it’s your first time in Milos, think about what you want your evenings to feel like: village sunsets in Plaka, port‑side energy in Adamas, or the hush of a syrmata by the sea. There’s no single “right” choice, just the version of Milos you want to wake up to every morning.
