Best restaurants in Ermoupoli

Ermoupoli is where Syros puts on its fancy pants, but also keeps its laid-back island soul. We quickly realized that wandering these marble streets could easily turn into a full-blown culinary adventure (with zero complaints from our family).

Whether you are looking for a quick lunch, local Greek tavernas, international cuisine, or fine dining, Ermoupoli has something for everyone.

Best breakfast and lunch restaurants

Although many of the Greek tavernas and Mediterranean restaurants we talk about in the following chapters also offer breakfast or lunch, we really think you should check one of the fancy coffee bars in Ermoupoli. Not only do they offer delicious breakfast and lunch options, but they also have the nicest atmosphere and vibe. Here are a couple of our favorites:

  • Box of Bush: run by Kosmas and his mom, Box of Bush is a place you will want to come back to. They have delicious coffee, vegetarian and vegan breakfast options, and great lunch dishes.
  • Armadillo: tucked away in a little street, just like Box of Bush and Jar, you come here for their fantastic coffee and delicious food (try the shakshuka).
  • Jar: this cozy little restaurant is the kind of place where you plan to stay for just one quick coffee and end up having brunch, dessert, and a cocktail in the afternoon, all in one visit (only open in high season).

Our favorite Greek tavernas in Ermoupoli

If you’re after that true Greek experience, grilled octopus, fried zucchini, and house wine served in tin pitchers, then pull up a chair at one of many amazing local Greek tavernas in Ermoupoli. We lost count of how many times we said, “Okay, this is the best tzatziki so far.”

  • To Tsipouradiko tis Mirsinis (Ermoupoli): every time we arrive in Syros, this is the first restaurant we go to because we have been longing for the meatballs, zucchini fries with yoghurt, and beetroot salad. It is located by the water (you recognize it by all the white chairs) and is usually packed with locals.
  • Sinnous: tucked between the charming alleys of Syros, this cozy little tavern is a local favorite, and we quickly understood why. The meze-style dishes are packed with flavor, from the honey-mustard chicken to creamy feta spreads and Sfakiani pita that melts in your mouth. Everything is freshly made with local ingredients, and the friendly owners make you feel like you’re dining at a friend’s house. It’s the kind of place we stumbled upon once… and then kept going back to.
  • Laoutari (Ermoupoli): a charming café that strikes the perfect balance between laid-back vibes and delicious food. Whether you’re popping in for a few flavorful dishes for lunch or a proper dinner, the menu has something for everyone, including great vegan options. The owner is kind and attentive, offering helpful suggestions and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere (even for little ones!). With thoughtful decor, occasional live music (usually on Sundays), and fair prices, it’s the kind of place that makes you wish you had more time to come back.

  • To Limani (Ermoupoli): an authentic seafood taverna right by the port, and a true hidden gem. It’s one of those places we walked past a dozen times before realizing how good it is. With sea views, fresh fish, and must-try fried zucchini, it delivers classic Greek flavors with heart. The service, especially from Constantinos, is warm, attentive, and genuinely memorable. Whether you’re catching a ferry or just soaking in the harbor breeze, this spot is a must for a relaxed, delicious meal.
  • Espermethentiv: in a small alley near the shipyard, this unassuming spot turned out to be one of the culinary highlights of our Syros adventure. With a small but thoughtful menu, every dish we tried was bursting with flavor, especially the pork belly, which one of us declared “the best in Greece” (and honestly, they might be right). The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, and the prices are surprisingly gentle for food this good. It’s the kind of place that quietly blows you away, and makes you want to come back before you’ve even left.
  • To Mikraki: this tiny, cozy spot (only open in high season) might not look like much at first glance, but it serves up some of the tastiest Greek comfort food we had on the island. From crispy cheese pies with honey to melt-in-your-mouth octopus and even a life-changing potato omelette (yes, really), every dish hits the spot, and the portions are generous, too. While service can be a little hit-or-miss depending on who’s working, the overall vibe is warm and welcoming, especially if you catch a night with live music.

Mediterranean and international restaurants in Ermoupoli

Now, if your taste buds are craving a world tour, Ermoupoli’s got you as well. Although the international food scene is not as extensive as, for example, on Mykonos, you can still get a nice mix of different cuisines.

  • Ciel Bar: located by Asteria Beach, Ciel (only open in high season) is one of those places where you go for a quick drink or swim, and somehow end up staying all day. Whether you’re starting your morning with a peaceful dip off the dock, spending the afternoon on one of their sunbeds, or dressing up for a sunset sushi-and-wine kind of evening, it nails the island-chic vibe without trying too hard. Yes, it’s a bit on the pricey side, but the stunning views and stylish atmosphere make it feel like money well spent.
  • Sta Vapori: perched above one of Syros’ most beautiful beaches, this charming spot is a brunch lover’s dream with a view to match (only open in high season). Whether you’re sipping mastiha cocktails at sunset or rushing through an avocado toast before catching the ferry, the staff somehow makes it all feel relaxed and special. The vibe is romantic and peaceful, with breezy indoor seating and a cozy terrace overlooking the Aegean Sea that begs for long, lazy lunches. Yes, it’s a little pricier than your average island café—but with views like these, who’s complaining?

  • Khin Kao: if you are longing for Asian food while staying in Syros, Khin Kao is your place to go! They have some proper Thai food here! Try the red curry (which tastes exactly as you would get it in Thailand) and the bao buns! The cook and owners are super friendly and will welcome you with open arms.
  • Mammo: this bustling harbor hotspot seems to have cracked the code on how to please just about everyone, whether you’re after savory pancakes, a tasty chicken salad, or a cocktail that could rival any high-end bar. With friendly staff, generous portions, and a menu that stretches from açai bowls to spaghetti carbonara (seriously), it’s no wonder people keep coming back multiple times during their stay.
  • Solo Grano: if you’re looking for top-notch pizza in Syros, and probably our favorite Italian, this is the place to go. With a cozy atmosphere and excellent service, the restaurant offers large, delicious pizzas made with high-quality ingredients and homemade pasta that stands out from the rest. The limited seating can be a challenge, so it’s worth the effort to book in advance or take away your pizza.
  • Amvix: a must-visit Italian restaurant in Syros, known for its authentic and mouthwatering dishes. The menu features homemade pasta, like the highly recommended spinach and ricotta ravioli in sage brown butter, and pizzas that are perfect for sharing. The lovely setting, paired with attentive service, makes it a standout, especially if you’re craving Italian after enjoying Greek cuisine.

  • Avant Garden: a hidden culinary gem in Syros, offering a fine dining experience that rivals Michelin-starred restaurants. Set in a stunning courtyard, the ambiance is romantic and elegant, with attentive service that complements the exquisite food. Each dish showcases inventive flavor combinations and high-quality local ingredients, beautifully presented and thoughtfully paired with an impressive Greek wine list.
  • Mazi: a charming and beautifully designed restaurant in Ermoupoli that offers a refined take on traditional Greek cuisine, blending authentic flavors with creative flair. Set in a serene outdoor space built around old ruins with greenery and vines as a roof, it provides a cozy and tranquil dining atmosphere, perfect for both brunch and dinner. Although the prices are higher than average, food, excellent cocktails, and an unforgettable setting make it well worth the visit.

Best Gyros and Souvlaki places in Ermoupoli

Let’s be honest, no trip to Greece is complete without at least five (okay, ten) gyros or souvlaki wrapped in warm pita and dripping with garlicky tzatziki. Ermoupoli totally delivers on this front, and we made it our unofficial mission to try as many as humanly possible (all in the name of research, of course). Here are our favorites:

  • Gnision Souvlaki: when we were staying in Syros for months, we would walk up to this charming little place conveniently located in the shopping street and order a delicious and flavorful souvlaki or gyros for only 3.5 euros. You can choose to take it away or enjoy it outside. The vegan gyros with plant-based meat are great as well, while the traditional pork gyros are equally praised for their taste. The food is fresh, quick, and reasonably priced.
  • Kamarias: some of the best gyros in Greece (if you ask us), with everything from the gyros to the potatoes made by hand, ensuring top-quality flavors. The chicken souvlaki on the stick is another must-try dish, praised for its taste and freshness.
  • Pitaki: located at Miaouli Square, this local gem in Syros offers delicious Greek dishes with generous portions, including standout items like their flavorful gyros, souvlaki, and a unique twist on Greek salad with croutons. While not fancy, the food is good and it’s a popular spot.
  • Street… Food Ethnic: a must-visit for anyone craving delicious, fresh street food made with love by Persephone. From the highly praised vegan gyros to the custom-made club sandwiches, everything is made with quality ingredients and great attention to detail. With affordable prices and a focus on local produce, it’s a fantastic choice for anyone exploring the island.

Restaurants in Ano Syros you can’t miss

Ah, Ano Syros, where your reward for climbing those endless stone steps is food with a view. This medieval hilltop village isn’t just ridiculously charming, it’s also home to some atmospheric restaurants and bars.

Picture this: live bouzouki music, a carafe of local wine on the table, and a plate of melt-in-your-mouth food in front of you while overlooking Ermoupoli. Pure magic.

Don’t expect anything too fancy, but that’s the charm: home-style cooking, warm hospitality, and views that might just bring a tear to your eye (or maybe that was the ouzo?). Almost all places are closed during the wintertime.

  • Maison de Meze: if you walk up the Ano Syros by the main stairs, you’ll walk right into this charming little restaurant. The food is simple but fantastic. We loved the garlic bread, but they also have unique dishes like corn toast with local cheese and traditional Greek favorites, all made with fresh ingredients. You can also enjoy creative drinks like kiwi juice and the mastiha-infused Mochiou cocktail. With a peaceful vibe, reasonable prices, and the opportunity to purchase homemade local products, it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing meal or coffee in a picturesque setting.
  • Braziliana Snack Bar: this vibrant spot in Ano Syros offers a perfect blend of delicious food, refreshing drinks, and breathtaking views over Ermoupoli and the harbor. We had the best fennel pie and ancient-style pizza here, but you should also try the pizza with blue cheese and fig jam.
  • Chima & Tsouvalata: this popular spot in Ano Syros is a must-visit for anyone craving delicious Greek street food, especially souvlaki. Known for its generous portions and high-quality lamb and beef combinations, the food here is both tasty and affordable. This place also opens up earlier, and is one of the only places you can go to in Ano Syros during the low season.

Other restaurants in Syros

Besides the restaurants in Ermoupoli and Ano Syros, there are other hidden gems scattered around the island. You will need to rent a car or grab a taxi for some of them, as public transport doesn’t go there. The ones that are located in the villages or by the popular beaches are accessible by bus during the summer season.

  • Plakostroto (Ai Michalis): a charming restaurant located in the northern part of Syros, offering breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding Cycladic islands. The menu features delicious, freshly prepared Greek dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, including standout items like the melitzanes imam and lamb. Come here in the evening to catch the sunset, after you do one of our favorite hikes in Apano Meria. With reasonable prices and a lovely setting, it’s a hidden gem that’s definitely worth a visit.
  • Calmo Mare (Finikas): this charming taverna in Finikas is a local favorite and offers incredible traditional Greek food at great prices, making it a top choice for both locals and visitors. The menu features a variety of well-portioned dishes, from delicious lamb chops and cheese balls to fresh squid and turbot. With friendly and attentive staff, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed meal with an unobstructed view of the bay. It’s a popular spot, so reservations are recommended, especially during busy times.
