Is Syros worth visiting?

Without a doubt, yes!

First of all, Syros is truly an amazing place to discover. It offers a unique blend of rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. Unlike its more famous neighbors, Syros boasts charming neoclassical architecture in Ermoupoli. But if you are looking for the whitewashed typical, you can find those in Any Syros too. There are also beautiful beaches like Galissas and Kini, and a vibrant culinary scene featuring local delicacies such as Loukoumi and Syros cheese.

Secondly, Syros is alive all year round (even in winter)! As the capital of the Cyclades, people actually live here, which gives the island a completely different vibe. The locals are really friendly and usually don’t treat you as a tourist. Here, you can learn what it feels like to live on a Greek island.

And last but not least, Syros is still somewhat of a hidden gem. When it comes to the Cyclades, many travelers flock to the more famous islands like Mykonos and Santorini, often overlooking Syros. This means you can enjoy this island without the cruises and huge crowds coming in. Although it does get busy during the summer months, it’s nothing compared to some of the other Cycladic islands.

Trust us when we say you have to come to Syros! With its welcoming locals and authentic cultural experiences, Syros is a must-visit destination for those seeking a true taste of Greece.

What’s the best time to visit Syros?

Although a year-round destination, the best time to visit Syros is from May to October when the weather is nice and everything is open. However, each season offers something special.

  • Spring: The island comes to life with mild temperatures and blooming wildflowers, making it the ideal time for hiking and exploring the beaches and Ano Syros. You can also enjoy most of it without a lot of other tourists.
  • Summer (June to August): This is the busiest time, especially with visitors from Athens. If you love vibrant beach scenes and open restaurants, summer is the time to go, though expect more crowds and many yachts in the harbor.
  • Autumn: For a more peaceful experience, visit in autumn. The nice weather, warm waters, and golden hues make it a perfect time and the big crowds have left.
  • Winter: Though quieter, winter in Syros has its own charm. Cozy cafes and tavernas serve hearty Greek dishes, and you can experience the island at a slower pace. Although a lot of things are open in Ermoupoli, keep in mind that Ano Syros is quieter during these months with most of the shops and restaurants closed.

How to get to Syros

Syros is one of the Greek islands located in the Aegean Sea, about 170 km south of Athens.

The quickest (and most expensive) way to get to Syros is by plane. You can fly between Syros Island National Airport (JSY) and Athens, which takes around 35 minutes. During the winter there are 3 flights a week, in summer you can fly daily in and out of Syros.

Most visitors, however, take the ferry from Athens to Syros. This is a more affordable and scenic option. Ferries from Piraeus run daily, with the high-speed options (only during summer) taking 3-4 hours and the slower conventional ferries taking 4-5 hours. You can even cross with your vehicle.

If you are already on one of the other Cycladic islands, Syros is also well-connected to Mykonos, Tinos, Paros, Naxos, etc, especially during summer.

How to get around in Syros

Getting around Syros is relatively easy and you have many options, such as a taxi, bus, rental car, scooter, bike, or boat.

The island has a reliable public bus system connecting major towns, beaches, and attractions. If you’re visiting in summer, buses run more frequently than in winter. Check the bus timetable in Syros and Ermoupoli to get the most accurate data. There is even a free bus running in Ermoupoli.

Taxis are also available throughout the island. In Ermoupoli, they are usually waiting at the harbor and around Miaoullis Square. Or you can also call them to pick you up where you want.

For more flexibility, consider renting a car, scooter, or bike, especially useful if you want to explore more remote areas of the island. Remember that many places on the other side of the island are closed in winter, so it’s best to check or call ahead before heading to one of the beaches.

What to do in Syros

As we mentioned before, there are a lot of things to do in Syros, whether you travel solo, as a couple, with friends, or as a family. We have been in Syros for several months already, and plan to go back many more times.

During this time, we discovered the entire island, from the small but bustling capital Ermoupoli to the remote northern beaches. We believe there is something to do in Syros for everybody, whether you are a history lover or prefer to relax on the beach.

Because Syros is a place where locals actually live all year round, part of Syros’ attraction is not only visiting the must-dos but also capturing the vibe and the feeling of being on a Greek island. It’s about tasting the food, watching the locals doing their daily jobs, and overlooking the ocean everywhere you are.

Below, we have listed our Syros bucket list, with the best things to do in Syros. We will keep this list updated continuously, to give you the best possible experience when you visit Syros during your Greek island adventures.

1. Explore Ermoupoli: the heart of Syros

Ermoupoli is the beating heart of Syros. Take your time to stroll through its charming streets and feel the pulse of daily life in this bustling capital, where locals go about their routines, from morning coffee at a neighborhood café to evening strolls along the waterfront.

The town has a rich history as the capital of the Cyclades and a thriving commercial hub in the 19th century. And that shows in its unique neoclassical buildings and historic squares. But this is also the place to be for delicious Greek and international meals at one of the many restaurants or a drink in one of the bars.

Unlike many tourist-centric destinations, Ermoupoli is a living city that residents call home year-round, offering a genuine glimpse into Greek island life. We stayed here for several months and Ermoupoli embraced us by immersing us in the local culture and feeling like part of the community. If you have time, stay here for a couple of nights and feel the rhythm and beauty of this lovely town.

In the next paragraphs, we go over some of the best things to do in Ermoupoli.

2. Relax at Asteria Beach

Asteria Beach is a favorite spot among both locals and visitors. The view from the concrete platform, with the small rocky beach and the blue dome of the Saint Nicolas church in the background, is probably one of the most photographed spots in Syros.

It is the perfect place to do yoga, read a book, or listen to the waves while eating your takeaway lunch. But it is also the best place to swim in Ermoupoli. Even during the winter months, the locals come here to take a dip in the Mediterranean Sea. We would advise a wetsuit though, if you aren’t used to swimming in cold waters.

During the summer months, you can also enjoy a drink or a delicious meal at the beach bar Ciel. This stylish place is perfect for enjoying the views over the Aegean Sea while enjoying a glass of wine and some sushi (which we can highly recommend).

3. Wander around the classy Vaporia district

The Vaporia district in Ermoupoli is a lovely area, just behind Asteria Beach, that showcases the island’s rich history and architecture. Known as the “Noble Quarter,” Vaporia is characterized by its stunning neoclassical mansions that once belonged to wealthy shipowners and merchants. Some of them are turned into hotels, but a lot of them are still privately owned.

Wander through its marble streets and admire the facades, wrought-iron balconies, and vibrant bougainvillea that grow over the buildings. The atmosphere here is both tranquil and picturesque, making it a perfect spot for leisurely strolls and photography.

With its proximity to the sea, Vaporia also offers breathtaking views of the Aegean, where you can watch boats and ferries glide by and feel the gentle sea breeze. Don’t forget to visit the Church of Saint Nicholas in the center of Vaporia, the stunning Greek-Orthodox church with its recognizable blue roof.

4. Discover picturesque Ano Syros

When you approach Syros by ferry, the sight of Ano Syros perched on one of the two hills is unforgettable. This medieval hilltop town is full of charm, with narrow streets that wind up to the Catholic Church of Saint George.

Read more: Discover the best things to do in Ano Syros

It is the oldest part of Ermoupoli and has the traditional Cycladic architecture, that many visitors know from islands like Mykonos or Paros. When you ascend its narrow, winding streets, you’ll be greeted by charming whitewashed houses with colorful doors and lots of flowers, creating a picturesque backdrop against the stunning Aegean Sea.

The village is steeped in history, going back to the medieval period and Venetian era. The cobblestone paths, ancient structures, Venetian influences, and impressive Church of Saint George are all remnants of these times. But even now it seems as if time stood still here. Some older locals never leave this hill and still use donkeys to move material up and down the steep steps.

In summer, Ano Syros comes alive, with some local shops, restaurants, and late-night bars such as Theosis. In winter, however, Any Syros is pretty empty, except for some local people who live here. But it is always a must-visit destination and one of the best things to do in Syros.

TIP: If you love history and music, a visit to the Markos Vamvakaris Museum in Ano Syros is a must. It offers fascinating insights into the island’s musical heritage and its connection to rebetiko music. Vamvakaris is often referred to as the “king” of rebetiko, due to his mastery of the bouzouki, the traditional Greek string instrument. The museum showcases personal items, musical instruments, and recordings, allowing visitors to learn more about the man who helped shape the sound of modern Greek music

5. Visit one of the museums in Ermoupoli

Syros has plenty of history to offer, from its ancient to its more recent industrial past. In Ermoupoli, there are a few interesting museums for history lovers.

Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli

The Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli offers an in-depth look at the island’s rich industrial past. It is housed near the dockyard in restored 19th-century factories (still operating until a few decades ago) and showcases the historical significance of Ermoupoli as one of the most important industrial centers in Greece during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

This museum features an extensive collection of photographs, maps, and architectural designs that highlight the rise of neoclassical architecture in Syros. Visitors can also explore artworks by local painters from the 19th century, view products created by women’s associations in the early 20th century, and experience a digital representation of public and industrial buildings.

Archaeological Museum of Syros

This museum features artifacts from prehistoric sites like Kastri and Chalandriani, as well as sculptures and tombstones from ancient Syros.

The archaeological museum was established in 1834, making it one of the oldest museums in Greece, and is located in the town hall (with a separate entrance). It is a rather small museum, but it gives a good insight into the ancient past of Syros.

Gallery of the Cyclades

Established in 1994, the Cyclades Art Gallery of Syros is situated in a historic warehouse that once served as a cargo storage facility. There are regularly temporary exhibitions by Greek artists, celebrating the art and traditions of Cycladic life.

The gallery also has a small theater that hosts a variety of performances. Best of all, entry to the Cyclades Art Gallery is free, and visitors can enjoy complimentary guided tours if they wish.

6. Taste and shop local products

Syros is a destination for food enthusiasts and shoppers alike, with its unique local products such as Loukoumi and San Michali cheese. But the island also boasts a wine scene, with a couple of local vineyards (such as Chatzakis winery) producing delicious Greek wines.

  • Loukoumi is a sweet made from sugar, starch, and flavors like rosewater and citrus. It’s often elegantly packaged, making it a great souvenir. In one of Syros’ oldest Loukoumi shops, you can watch the production process, taste them, and buy the local delicacies.
  • San Michali cheese is uniquely produced from cows’ milk on Syros island and is known for its distinct flavor and creamy texture. They call it the parmesan of Syros and we have to agree that’s what it reminded us of. Besides this cheese, you can also find delicious soft, white cheese made with all kinds of herbs. One of our favorites is the Tyrosyra cheese.

In Ermoupoli, you can shop these local delicacies and others (such as olives, herbs, wine, etc.) in some of the local charming shops, for example, Kostas Prekas. Beyond food, there are also a few shops featuring stylish local Greek fashion and artwork. Exploring these shops not only provides a chance to savor the island’s flavors but also to support local artisans and experience the vibrant culture of Syros.

7. Explore the churches of Ermoupoli, Syros

Syros is a unique island because the Greek-Orthodox and Catholic communities have lived here together in peace, for centuries already. The two main hills of Ermoupoli are known as the Orthodox and Catholic hills, each with its own church on top of them.

One of the interesting things to do when you come to Syros is discover this rich mix of Orthodox and Catholic churches, each with its own unique beauty.

Saint Nicholas Church (Agios Nikolaos)

This neoclassical Greek-Orthodox church was built in the 19th century in the Vaporia area and close to Asteria Beach. It boasts a stunning façade, two bell towers, and a majestic blue dome. Inside, you’ll find frescoes, woodwork, and a magnificent marble iconostasis. But one of the things we liked most, was the sunlight that fell through the colorful windows, creating a special effect in the church.

Most beautiful places in Syros Saint Nicholas Church

Church of the Resurrection (Anastasis)

This Greek-Orthodox church is visible from a lot of places in Ermoupoli, as it lies on top of one of the hills. If you arrive in Syros by ferry, you will immediately notice its distinctive blue dome. In the evening, it is even more beautiful when it lights up, standing proudly above Ermoupoli. Inside, you’ll find beautiful icons and ornate decorations. When you stand in front of the church, it offers some of the best vistas on the island.

Saint George’s Cathedral (Agios Georgios)

On top of the other hill, situated in Ano Syros, lies this Roman Catholic church, dating back to the 13th century. The tower has been destroyed a couple of times by lightning and fire, but has been rebuilt and still overlooks Ermoupoli and the Mediterranean Sea. Admire its simple yet elegant architecture and the panoramic views of Ermoupolis and the sea.

8. Attend a local festival

One of the fun things to do in Syros is experience one of the many cultural events and festivals throughout the year, including our favorite, Syros Carnival! Because believe us, the people in Syros know how to throw a party! Here’s a list of some of the major events:

  • Syros Carnival (Apokries): Held in the weeks before Lent, this colorful carnival is full of parades, masquerade balls, and street parties, with music, dance, and elaborate costumes. There is a parade in Ano Syros on Saturday and one in the center of Ermoupoli on Sunday.
  • Easter Celebrations: Easter is a major event in Syros, as it is the only place in the world where the Orthodox and Catholic churches celebrate Easter together. Highlights include processions, the Resurrection service, and a festive Easter Sunday feast. Fireworks are shot at three different places.
  • Ermoupolia Festival: A summer festival in Ermoupolis, featuring music, theater, dance, and art exhibitions. Venues like the Apollon Theatre and Miaouli Square play host to a wide range of performances.
  • Syros Jazz Festival: Held in the fall, this event attracts jazz lovers and musicians from all over, with performances in various venues across Ermoupolis.

9. Discover the local Greek cuisine (with a view)

Syros in general, and Ermoupoli in particular, offer a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars. A lot of them are open all year round, but some of them, you can only enjoy during the summer months.

You can try all kinds of food, from Italian to Thai, but most of all you should taste the delicious local Greek cuisine! Our personal favorite is To Tsipouradiko tis Mirsinis, located in the harbor. It’s a typical Greek tavern where you can order all different kinds of local dishes and share everything with your family and friends.

If you enjoy a meal with a view, you won’t be disappointed either. At the harbor in Ermoupoli, numerous year-round restaurants and taverns offer terraces with stunning views of the water and boats that dock here. In Vaporia and Ano Syros, you have many restaurants that offer beautiful views over the ocean. But for a truly scenic experience, try O Mitsos and Plakostroto outside Ermoupoli, especially during sunset.

10. Enjoy a performance at the Apollon theatre

Attending a performance at the Apollon Theatre in Ermoupoli is definitely one of the highlights of things to do in Syros. Constructed over 160 years ago, this neoclassical theater is an architectural gem that boasts an elegant façade and a stunning interior, often compared to the famous La Scala in Milan.

It hosts a variety of performances, including operas, concerts, and theatrical productions, which draw both locals and visitors alike. Attending a show here is a truly amazing experience, as the theater’s acoustics and ambiance transport you back in time.

11. Dive into the nightlife in Ermoupoli

Had enough to eat but not ready to go to bed yet? Ermoupoli offers a vibrant nightlife with a mix of bars and cafes, that stay open until late in the night. As Syros is a very safe place, you don’t have to worry about walking back to your accommodation in the middle of the night.

One of the most famous bars is Barrio, located on Miaoulis Square. Severo’s, at the harbor, is one of the town’s larger bars. During summer, visit Mousoutou or Suerte for a sophisticated cocktail in the town center.

TIP: For those visiting in the summer, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a film at the open-air Cinema Pallas in Ermoupoli, where you can watch classic and contemporary movies under the stars, creating a magical evening.

12. Watch local life pass by on Miaouli Square

Miaouli Square is the vibrant heart of Ermoupoli, framed by palm trees, statues, and stunning neoclassical buildings that reflect the island’s rich history. While we were living in Syros, this was our favorite to relax with our kids, have a drink on one of the terraces, or meet other people.

Dominating the square is the impressive Town Hall, designed by the renowned architect Ernst Ziller. Take some time to explore the impressive inside. You can also find the archaeological museum of Syros here. And on public holidays, there are often parades in the square.

Surrounding the square are charming cafes and bakeries, where locals gather to enjoy their morning coffee or engage in lively conversations, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This bustling square is an ideal spot to sit back and watch the daily rhythms of local life unfold, from children playing to friends catching up over lunch. Or maybe you want to feed the pigeons?

13. Explore Apano Meria, the wild northern part of Syros

The contrast between the bustling Ermoupoli or busy southern beaches and Apano Meria, the rugged northern region of Syros, couldn’t be bigger. This area is known for its dramatic landscapes characterized by rocky cliffs, secluded coves, and breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.

Because this area is so remote, and there are no roads leading to the beaches, it has been spared of the mass tourism that some other Cycladic islands have experienced, and even the Southern part of Syros knows about during the summer months.

One of our favorite activities here was going on the amazing hikes scattered across northern Syros. You can find a network of trails that wind through the picturesque terrain, crossing the rocky hills covered with bushes, and leading to hidden beaches like Americanou Beach or the prehistoric site of Kastri.

14. Relax on the best beaches in Syros

Syros is home to some lovely beaches with crystal blue water, each with its own vibe. If you are staying more than one day in Syros, you definitely need to explore the Syros beaches! Some are great for families with their shallow waters, others are the place to be for snorkeling.

During winter, you will have almost all beaches completely to your own. Most taverns or restaurants are only open during the warmer months, although some stay open in winter (such as Allou Yialou Beach Restaurant at Kini Beach). During summer, however, the popular beaches can be packed, offering rental chairs and umbrellas, and lots of bars and restaurants to enjoy a drink or meal.

The most popular beaches in Syros are reachable by car, taxi, or bus. But the more remote ones can only be reached by hiking or by boat.

15. Take a boat tour around Syros or to the neighboring islands

Especially during the warmer months (from April to October), one of the best things to do in Syros is rent a boat or attend a boat tour to go to some of the remote beaches or visit one of the islands nearby. Seeing Syros from the sea is a completely different experience that we can highly recommend!

During such a boat tour, you can explore hidden coves, visit the unique Chapel of Agios Stefanos, swim in secluded bays, and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery. Some tours also offer snorkeling or diving opportunities, including over a sunken ferry off the coast.

16. Hike the Syros trails and enjoy the views over the Aegean Sea

As mentioned before, one of our favorite things to do in Syros is hiking. The island offers several scenic hiking trails, taking you to remote beaches, unique geological formations, and even a chapel.

Read more: The best hikes on Syros

Off-season is a great time to hike as the temperatures are lower and the vegetation is less dry. Always wear good hiking shoes (or sturdy sneakers) as the paths can be challenging, steep, and rocky. Also, consider wearing long pants to protect you from the bushes scratching your legs.

TIP: Download Maps.me or Alltrails to get the most accurate hiking trails. Always bring enough water, even in winter! You can also contact the Syros Hiking Team for more information.

Some of our favorite hikes include:

  • Kastri Trail: A 4-hour hike to the historic Kastri settlement, boasting stunning views over the Aegean Sea.
  • Papouri to Kini Beach: This beautiful hike from Papouri to Kini Beach (passing Aetos, Varvaroussa, and Delfinin Beach) is around 8 kilometers (5 miles).
  • Schizomenes Gorge: A challenging but spectacular hike through the gorge.
  • Hike to the Chapel of Agios Stefanos: This chapel was created after the saint saved a fisherman fighting a large octopus! There is a signed trail that will lead you to this beautiful small church. Don’t forget to write a message in the book.

17. Discover the clear waters around Syros

Just like many of the other Cycladic islands, Syros is also blessed with blue and crystal clear waters! So during your Syros trip, you need to explore these waters as much as possible! You can admire them from a nice terrace, obviously, but we advise you to go a bit closer!

Here are some fun water activities you can do around Syros:

  • Swimming: almost all beaches are great for swimming. Some are ideal with kids, with their sandy and shallow waters, such as Galissas or Kini Beach. Others are more rocky, making them perfect for snorkeling or more intensive swimming, such as Asteria Beach or Armeos Beach.
  • Snorkeling: the Mediterranean offers some of the best snorkeling in Europe. In Syros, there are some beaches with great snorkeling, such as Armeos or Achladi Beach. But you can also rent a boat to go to other snorkeling places, such as a sunken ferry.
  • Diving: if you would like to dive in Syros, contact the Greek Scuba Dive Club or Salt Water Divers Syros.
  • Windsurfing: attend the Syros Windsurfing School, located in Posidonia to test your windsurfing skills on the Mediterranean waters!

After a day of exploring Syros island, head to the beaches on the Western coast of Syros, such as Galissas Beach and Kini Beach, or the more remote Lia Beach and Americanou Beach, to watch an amazing sunset over the Aegean Sea.

Especially Kini Beach is known for its stunning sunset skies, combined with the relaxed vibe and the lovely taverns offering you delicious meals. A perfect way to end your day.

You can go from seaside villages, such as Vari, Kini, Posidonia, Finikas, and Galissas to some of the old traditional inland villages like Chroussa or San Michalis.

End your day in Plakostroto restaurant, located on top of a hill, giving you magnificent sunsets overlooking Syros and the neighboring islands.

Being on a Greek island, if possible, try to stay in one of the more unique accommodations, often boasting spectacular views over the Mediterranean. You are on holiday after all!

If you are wondering about where to stay in Syros, we would advise you to stay in Ermoupoli or Ano Syros if you only have one day or a couple of days, but also stay somewhere else on the island if you have more time.

Stylish Ermoupoli has many fantastic stays, often located in the stunning neoclassic buildings. But also on the rest of the island, you can find beautiful villas overlooking the ocean.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Kini Aquarium, located in the small village of Kini on Syros, is a great visit for marine enthusiasts and families. This small yet charming aquarium showcases a variety of local marine life, giving you the opportunity to learn about the diverse ecosystems of the Aegean Sea.

The exhibits feature an array of colorful fish, fascinating invertebrates, and other sea creatures, all housed in well-maintained tanks that mimic their natural habitats. Beyond just an exhibition space, Kini Aquarium is dedicated to educating the public about marine conservation and the importance of protecting the ocean’s delicate ecosystems.

The friendly staff often engages in informative talks, making it a fun and educational experience for all ages. After exploring the aquarium, you can go to Kini Beach, where you can put your new knowledge into practice, trying to spot some of the fish in the crystal clear waters.

22. Become friends with the cats in Syros

Cats are a beloved and integral part of life on Syros, where they roam freely, adding to the island’s charm and character. You can see them lounging in sun-soaked squares, exploring narrow alleyways, and keeping watch over local shops and tavernas. If you are a cat lover, you will find many friends here.

Unfortunately, not all of them are well cared for. Recognizing the importance of these cats to the community and the need for more support, several sanctuaries have been established on the island to care for and protect them.

Organizations like the Syros Cats and God’s Little People work tirelessly to provide food, medical care, and shelter for stray and abandoned cats, ensuring their well-being and promoting responsible pet ownership.

Visitors to Syros often find joy in interacting with these cats, and supporting the sanctuaries through donations or volunteer work, a wonderful way to contribute to the welfare of these lovely animals.

25. Take a day trip to the nearby islands

Syros is an ideal base for island-hopping, especially during summer when it’s easy to take a day trip to nearby islands like Tinos, Mykonos, and Paros. During winter this is possible too, but there are fewer ferries so you might have to stay for a few days. Here are some of the best islands to visit on a day trip from Syros.

Mykonos

The very famous neighbor of Syros is known for its vibrant nightlife and stunning beaches. But Mykonos is also home to iconic landmarks like the windmills and stunning landscapes. You can go to Mykonos for one day, or decide to stay a bit longer.

Delos

Close to Mykonos lies the island of Delos, one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in Greece. In Greek mythologies, it was considered to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Now you can still visit the archaeological site while also enjoying the views over the ocean.

Tinos

Known for its pilgrimage site, the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, Tinos also offers charming alleys, local tavernas, and vibrant festivals. You can have lunch or dinner in Tarsanás, a fish restaurant in the harbor of Tinos.

Paros

This island is known for its picturesque capital, Parikia, and the quaint village of Naoussa. Paros is also great for water sports enthusiasts, particularly at Golden Beach. Together with Mykonos, this is one of the more popular islands in the Cyclades.
