Car hire in Syros: a complete guide to renting a car in Syros

Do you really need to rent a car in Syros?

If you are visiting the Greek island of Syros, you might wonder how to get around and fully explore the island. While almost everything is walkable in Ermoupoli and Ano Syros, renting a car in Syros is highly recommended when you want to see more of this beautiful island and have more than one day in Syros.

You can also take public transport, which connects Ermoupoli with the most popular villages such as Kini, Galissas, and Finikas, but schedules can be limited (especially in low season), and you won’t be able to go to all the best beaches in Syros or some of the remote villages. Taxis are an option as well, as they can drive anywhere. But it will soon be more expensive than renting a car.

Overall, car hire in Syros gives you more flexibility to visit places at your own pace, stay in some of the best accommodations in Syros outside of Ermoupoli and Ano Syros, discover hidden gems, and fully explore all the best things to do in Syros.

Is car hire in Syros expensive?

Rental costs obviously depend on the car type, rental duration, and season. But generally speaking, car hire in Syros isn’t expensive, especially compared to some of the more popular Cycladic islands such as Mykonos or Paros.

  • Economy cars: start at €30–€50 per day in the low season.
  • SUVs or bigger cars: usually start at €80–€120 per day.

Expect additional fees for GPS, child seats, or extra insurance. We recommend you take the extra insurance, as the windy roads or the Greek driving style might increase the chances of damage.

Parking in Ermoupoli is usually pretty easy but can be challenging during peak season. If your hotel doesn’t offer a parking spot, you can try to find parking in the streets, but there is limited availability in the town center.

Some of the beaches, such as Galissas or Kini, have parking spots as well. Try to come early in high season as they fill up quickly.

Road trip itinerary for Syros

Syros is relatively small so you can easily get around in a day. However, if you want to do some of its incredible hikes, spend a day at the beach, or go for a sunset dinner, it’s better to rent a car for several days.

TIP: The road network in Syros is easy to navigate with Google Maps or a GPS. Check with the rental company if they have a GPS or a phone holder for the car.

If you only have one day to rent a car, we recommend you to drive south from Ermoupoli, and do a loop of the southern part of the island.

  • You’ll pass the beach villages Azolimnos, Vari, Megas Gialos, Poseidonia, Galissas, and Kini. In each of these places, you can visit the beach, hike to smaller beaches, have a delicious meal, etc.
  • If you have more time, you can drive back to Ermoupoli (finishing your southern loop) and drive up north all the way to the village of Kampos. Enjoy the breathtaking views over the Aegean while driving here. Be aware that the roads are narrow and steep here.

TIP: End your day with a dinner at Plakostroto while enjoying the sunset or a winetasting at Chatzakis Winery.

This itinerary covers the island’s highlights in one day but as mentioned before, you can easily rent your car for a couple of days so you have room for spontaneous discoveries.
