Ermoupoli’s coastal loop hike to Agios Dimitrios

Ermoupoli’s coastal loop hike to Agios Dimitrios

Hiking ranks high among our favorite things to do on Syros. This was one of our almost-weekly hikes while staying in Ermoupolis. All you need for this hike from Ermoupolis to Agios Dimitrios is sturdy shoes and water—you’re all set. No car required; the trail starts in central Ermoupolis and is accessible to everyone.

This scenic loop hike starts in central Ermoupoli and takes you up to the Anástasis Church, along roads to Agios Dimitrios, and back via the coast to Asteria Beach. It’s about 5 km total, mostly on roads and paths with moderate elevation, ideal for a half-day (2h) adventure offering sea views and island charm.

The end of the hike is Asteria Beach, where you can take a dip in the water. In summer, there’s the Ciel Bar where you can grab a drink. Or, during the other months, you can get a coffee at one of Syros’s best coffee bars, Saint Syros.

  • Distance: Approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) loop.
  • Duration: 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on pace and stops.
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate (steep stairs at start, road walking).
  • Elevation gain: Around 150m up to Anástasis Church, then down.
  • Best time: Year-round; mornings for cooler temps and views.

Starting point

Begin at vibrant Miouli Square (Miaouli Square) in Ermoupoli’s heart, near cafes and the seafront promenade. This central spot is easy to reach. There is a bakery at the square if you need to buy some extra water or a sandwich.

Part 1: Hike up to Anastasis Church

From Miouli Square (1), tackle the steep stairs winding through charming neighborhoods up to Anástasis Church (Church of the Resurrection of Christ) on Vrondado hill (2)—panoramic views of Ermoupoli and the sparkling Aegean await en route.

At the church, don’t miss the cannons offering a nice viewpoint over the harbor, plus a handy water tap right by the church to refill your bottle.

After visiting the church, continue north along the basketball court (which is open for everybody by the way) and proceed to Leophóros Kipríon Agnoouménon. You’ll walk downhill—don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful coastal vistas.

When you leave the street with houses just after the basketball court, you get a beautiful view of Ermoupolis and the harbor on the right. There, you can turn right briefly and look for one of the most beautiful viewpoints on Ermoupolis. There is even a bench where you can take a break.

Part 2: Downhill to Agios Dimitrios

Continue down to Sarris Planet Studios, a cluster of welcoming accommodations with sweeping views. Be careful not to miss the turnoff (3) from the main road to the studios. It’s here.

From there, spot the small road (4) or path veering off nearby, leading straight to the picturesque Agios Dimitrios Church. The first stretch goes steeply downhill, then you’ll follow a gently uphill section (5) to Agios Dimitrios (6).

If you walk towards Agios Dimitrios, you will see the desalination plant on the right. It is responsible for the water in Ermoupolis. The noise can sometimes be a bit disturbing when the wind comes from the south. Down at the desalination plant there is also a small beach, but it is not particularly beautiful to visit.

Perched in a serene hillside spot with stunning sea vistas, this charming whitewashed chapel is a peaceful highlight, often guarded by friendly resident cats lounging in the sun (though it’s not always open to enter).

Part 3: From Agios Dimitrios to Asteria Beach

Return via the coastal road that hugs the shoreline, passing beautiful spots with stunning views. Avoid heading back uphill toward Ano Syros (7)—instead, stick to the coastal path into Ermoupolis.

Just before you reach the center, you will see a staircase leading down at the Arion Hotel. If you follow those stairs, you will arrive at a small beach. Swimming is difficult there, but it is a nice spot if you are looking for some peace and quiet or want to do a few meditation exercises.

If you continue following the road after that, you will first walk past the Historical Museum of Syros. After that, you are very quickly at Asteria Beach (8), the perfect spot for a refreshing dip or some well-deserved relaxation after your hike.
