We’ve stayed in Syros multiple times and explored the island from top to bottom. What are the best areas to stay in Syros?
Before diving into specific hotels, here’s a quick rundown of the main areas:
- Ermoupoli is the vibrant capital, great if you don’t have a car, full of restaurants, culture, and neoclassical charm.
- Ano Syros is the atmospheric medieval hilltop above Ermoupolis; very scenic and traditional, but deserted in winter
- Galissas is a popular sandy beach, perfect for families and beach lovers.
- Kini is a village on the west coast. In summer, it is a lively beach town, famous for sunsets and seafood.
- Finikas, a quiet bay, and a relaxed seaside vibe.

Best hotels in Ermoupoli (Syros Town)
If you only have one or two days on the island or you’re traveling without a car, Ermoupoli is the best base. You’re close to the ferry port, buses, taxis, and Asteria Beach, with endless choices for food, cafés, and evening strolls.

Best stays in Ano Syros: traditional & scenic
Perched above Ermoupoli, Ano Syros is a medieval settlement with winding alleys, whitewashed houses, and incredible views over the Aegean. You can walk up from Ermoupoli (or take a taxi or minibus up and wander down). There is also a small parking lot if you have a rental car.
Ano Syros is quieter than Ermoupolis, but in summer it’s definitely more atmospheric with cocktail bars, restaurants, and boutique shops. In winter, Ano Syros feels abandoned.

Anemomylos Windmill
One of the most unique places to stay on the island: a converted windmill with panoramic views. This is a completely different kind of accommodation with a lot of charm and character.
On the ground floor, guests will find a compact yet well-equipped kitchen, a cozy sofa bed, and a dining table. The first floor houses the bathroom while the second floor features the sleeping area, featuring a traditional iron bed beneath a striking circular wooden roof.

If you’re staying longer than a couple of days, we highly recommend splitting your time between Ermoupoli and one of the beach villages. Below you’ll find the best hotels and unique stays in the main seaside areas.
Galissas: best for classic beach holidays
Galissas is one of the most popular beaches on Syros: a long sandy bay, shallow water, and plenty of tavernas and cafés. It’s especially good for families and beach lovers. In winter, everything is closed.
Hotel Benois

For something more unique, Anassa Cycladic Village offers a glamping-style experience with tents and cabins among olive trees and almond trees. Kini: sunsets & seaside charm
Kini on the western coast used to be a small fishing village and has kept a lot of its authenticity, even though it’s now a popular summer destination. This beach is only a 15-minute drive from Ermoupolis. The sandy beach with shallow water is perfect for kids. Along the shore, there are some excellent seafood tavernas.

Just above Poseidonia, Finikas (Finikas Bay) is another lovely coastal village with a small harbor, sandy beach, and a lot of tavernas and cafés along the water. It’s lively in summer but still feels relaxed, and it has the bonus of a supermarket and some restaurants open all year round, making it a good shoulder-season choice.

Vari: sheltered family bay
On the southeastern coast, Vari is one of the most family-friendly beaches on Syros. The sandy beach lies in a sheltered bay, with shallow and usually very calm waters. It is also very protected from the wind from the north. It’s also easy to get there from Ermoupolis. Close to Vari, you have Achladi Beach with the beautiful Syra Suites
Syros Atlantis

Frequently Asked Questions
Ermoupoli is the best choice if you want the main town, restaurants, and easy access to everything. Beach areas like Galissas and Finikas are better if your trip is mostly about relaxing by the sea.
Syros has options across different budgets, from simple rooms to boutique stays, so you can usually find a hotel that fits your trip style.
Family-friendly hotels are usually the ones with larger rooms, parking, easy beach access, and quieter locations. Syros Dolphin Bay hotel and Anassa Cycladic Village are our two favorites.
Stay in Ermoupoli for atmosphere, dining, and shopping. Stay near the beach if your priority is swimming and a more relaxed holiday feel.
Renting a car in Syros is helpful if you want to explore beyond the main town, but it is not always necessary if you stay in Ermoupoli.There are also taxis and buses from Ermoupoli to the beaches.
Two to four nights is usually enough for a short island stay, but longer works better if you want beaches or day trips to Mykonos or Paros.
In the summer (July and August), everything is open, and beach bars and restaurants are in full swing. September is our favorite month: everything is still open, it is a bit quieter, and the water is still warm.
Final thoughts: where to stay in Syros
Syros has an incredible variety of places to stay for its size: from luxury mansions in Ermoupoli to windmills, eco villas, glamping sites, and family beach hotels.
If you only have 1–2 days, base yourself in Ermoupoli – you’ll be close to everything, including the ferry.
If you stay longer, consider splitting your time between Ermoupoli and one of the beach villages (Galissas, Kini, Poseidonia/Finikas, Vari, or Azolimnos) to experience both the vibrant capital and the relaxed seaside side of the island.
