A guide to the best shops in Syros: where to shop for local treasures, fashion, food & more

I came to Syros thinking I’d spend my time lounging on one of the beaches, hiking the island, and eating as much local food as possible. What I didn’t expect was to fall head over heels… with the shops in Ermoupoli and the rest of Syros.

Once you get to Syros, you’ll quickly realise the island’s charm isn’t just in its neoclassical mansions or crystal-clear waters. It’s also in the irresistible little boutiques, quirky artisan stores, and shops selling loukoumi in every flavor under the sun (yes, even the odd mastiha).

Wandering through Ermoupoli feels like stepping into a Mediterranean Pinterest board. One moment you’re browsing minimalist Greek fashion, the next you’re holding handmade soap that smells heavenly. Whether you’re a window shopper, a full-blown souvenir hoarder, or someone who just accidentally walks into shops and somehow ends up with three bags, Syros will get you.

In this guide, I’ll show you my favorite spots to find local treasures, Cycladic coolness, foodie gems, and gifts you’ll be reluctant to give away. Let the Greek-style treasure hunt begin!

Tips for shopping in Syros

Bargaining: While most prices are fixed and bargaining isn’t a thing like it is in some other countries, it’s always worth asking for a discount. Especially if you are buying multiple items or paying in cash, don’t hesitate.
Shopping hours: The opening hours of the shops can be a bit confusing. Many shops in Ermoupoli and Syros close for a midday break (siesta) between 2-3 pm and 5-6 pm and reopen in the evening. However, some shops only reopen on certain evenings, usually Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Local crafts and goods: Look for products produced or made on the island or the nearby islands, such as handmade ceramics, woven goods, olive oil, local cheeses, honey, and herbs. That way, you support the local people and the environment.

Where to shop in Syros

When it comes to shopping in Syros, Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros, is the main shopping destination on the island. Picture marble-paved little streets, pastel buildings, and shop windows that whisper, “Just one more dress won’t hurt.”

The town’s picturesque streets are lined with a mix of modern boutiques, traditional shops, and local markets, making it the best place to shop for a wide range of products. Especially Miaouli Square and the nearby alleys and Petrou Protopapadaki (the main shopping street) have lots to offer.

For something more atmospheric, head uphill to Ano Syros, where shops are tucked into whitewashed alleyways and feel more like hidden treasure chests than actual stores. You won’t find big malls or chain stores here, and thank the Greek gods for that.

During high season, you can also find a few shops in Galissas, Kini, Finikas, and Posidonia that offer beachwear, local crafts, and souvenirs. Although you don’t really come to these beaches to shop, they might be a nice change of scenery after lying on the beach for a while.

Our favorite fashion boutiques in Syros

Kriari Fashion Concept Store: A stylish boutique located in Ermoupoli, near the Apollon Theater, offering a curated collection of clothing and accessories for women. The shop features mainly Greek designers, focusing on quality and unique styles.
Eucalyptus: Cute boutique with beautiful clothing and superb quality of fabric. Very friendly owner.
The Curious Cat Fashion: A fun and unique store with handmade clothing, often with a cat sewn on top.
Hydora Concept Store: This small chain of luxury boutique stores offers beautiful international and Greek fashion from local designers.
Desperate Design Lab Fashion: For a truly special experience, go to this Greek handcrafted jewelry and accessories brand located at the end of the main shopping street. Two friends design everything themselves in their lab-showroom.
Needle and Thread: Great collection of clothes with amazing taste and perfect service! They have a women’s and a men’s shop in different locations in Ermoupoli.

Best local artisans, jewelry, and handmade goods shops in Syros

Physis Soap Lab: Lovely soap and cream shop in the heart of Syros, by the Apollon Theatre. Body cream, oil, soap, mist, and small gifts. All the products are handmade in-house by Anastasia, the passionate and kind owner.
Chimera Art & Craft: Beautiful pottery and other artwork by local designers. They also offer workshops.
Marasim Handmade Jewellery: A great variety of handmade jewelry with high-quality materials, handmade by the lovely owner Maria.
Art pottery workshop: Another great shop with very nice ceramics made with passion and talent by Mrs. Banou!
Vivliopontikas Bookstore: A great little bookstore with a nice selection of books and beautiful posters. A lovely and quiet corner in the bustling town of Ermoupoli.
I love wood (Ano Syros): Up in the medieval town of Ano Syros, you can find this lovely shop with beautiful handmade creations, often made of wood and with attention to detail. The right place on the island to buy unique jewelry, bags, gifts, and souvenirs!
Koukouli (Ano Syros): Another gem in Ano Syros, the lovely owner of this shop creates unique handmade gifts.

Our favorite food shops and local markets in Syros

Chiou Market Street: Located in the heart of Ermoupoli, this market street offers different little shops with fresh local vegetables, meat, seafood, etc. It’s the best place to buy fresh ingredients for cooking at home.
Kostas Prekas: A local grocery store, located close to the market street, offers traditional Greek cheeses, herbs, wine, honey, and other local delicacies.
Kritsinis George: Amazing selection of wines and spirits, great prices, very knowledgeable owner (who is already the third generation).
Topon Gefseis Organic Super Market: An organic food store, where you can find healthy and local products, with very friendly owners.
Loukoumia Sikoutris: The owners are very friendly and keen to explain the production process and history of the typical sweets of Syros, called loukoumia. The shop has a very authentic look to it. You can taste and buy loukoumia to bring home as gifts.

Best shops for kids

Kaloutas Toys: Our favorite toy store on the main shopping street, with a wide range of toys, games, and other stuff your kids will like.
Nemet Toy Store: One of the best toy and stationery stores in Syros! From toys to school supplies and gifts, they have everything you could ask for!
Piccolo House: Great shop with a variety of children’s clothes and very good service by the owner.
