Visit Agios Stefanos Chapel: a hidden gem in Syros

Visit Agios Stefanos Chapel: a hidden gem in Syros

A complete guide on how to hike to Agios Stefanos (Chapel of Saint Stephen) or visit by boat

When people think of Syros, they usually picture the elegant mansions of Ermoupoli, the whitewashed houses of Ano Syros, or lazy days on one of Syros’ beaches. But tucked away by the seaside, close to Galissas, is a little chapel so hidden, it almost feels like Syros itself is trying to keep it a secret.

Let me introduce you to Agios Stefanos Chapel, a tiny white chapel built under a cave, hugging the rocky cliffs above the sea. It’s dramatic. It’s remote. And it’s absolutely magical.

Which is exactly why visiting this tiny chapel is one of our favorite things to do in Syros. Not only because of the place itself, but also because of how to get there. For visiting Agios Stefanos, the journey is half the adventure.

You can either hike about 20 minutes from the road along a narrow path (one of our favorite Syros hikes) or arrive by boat if you prefer the scenic route without the sweat. If you are wondering how to visit Agios Stefanos, we have done both ways and will tell you exactly what to expect in this article.

What to know about Agios Stefanos

Legend has it that Agios Stefanos Chapel was built by a fisherman who found himself in a situation: he was being dragged into the depths by a giant octopus. In desperation, he prayed to Saint Stefanos, who (luckily for him) came through and saved the day. As a thank you, the fisherman carved out this little chapel under a rocky cave by the sea.

Agios Stefanos is celebrated twice a year, on August 19th and December 26th. During these feast days, crowds gather with their boat at the chapel for a special liturgy. Afterward, visitors are treated to the famous loukoumi (Syros’ version of Turkish delight) and mastic treats from Chios. Because what’s a pilgrimage without a little sugar at the end, right?

As you arrive at the chapel, either from the hiking trail or from the dock by the water, you’ll step onto a small paved terrace. One of the most picturesque sights is the small bell tower with a big cross on top of it, overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Inside the chapel, the interior is beautifully minimal: whitewashed walls, a lovely iconostasis, and even a guest book where you can leave a note. Light a candle, take a breath, and soak in the tranquility. You’re standing in a sacred spot that most tourists never see.

TIP: Take your time to sit outside of the chapel, just staring at the blue and taking in the views. If you come here around sunset, the views are even more breathtaking! Be aware though, if you have to hike back, you have to leave early enough, as the path can be tricky in the dark.

Hike to Agios Stefanos Chapel

The hike to Agios Stefanos is without a doubt one of our favorite hikes on Syros, and definitely the one you need to do if you have rented a car and only have a short time on the island.

The hike itself is short but adventurous and rewards you with jaw-dropping views, probably a few sore calves, and a magical destination. You might even run into some sheep or goat on the way there.

Views from the start of the hike to Agios Stefanos

We have walked the path several times now, in different seasons. Although pretty steep, most people can walk it (even our kids’ grandmother came along). Be aware, though, it is pretty rocky, uneven, and a bit challenging here and there.

The best time to hike to Agios Stefanos is from mid-October to April (low season). The temperatures are nice or even cold in winter (trust us when we tell you to bring a hat). You can also hike there in high season, just be aware that it can get very hot during the day, so bring enough water.

How to get there and walk to Agias Stefanos Chapel

To get to the starting point of the hike, you can either walk there from the lovely beach town of Galissas, grab a taxi from Ermoupoli or where you are staying in Syros, or drive your rental car here yourself.

TIP: If you drive yourself, we advise you to park your car around the starting point or on that street, and not drive down the steep road, as you will have a hard time turning to go up again.

Walk down the paved road until you reach the end of it, and see the sign pointing toward the chapel and showing the start of the trail. Though “sign” might be a bit generous. It’s more of a wooden board that looks like it’s been through some things. But trust it, and off you go.

This trail will take you all the way down to the chapel, and yes, all that you have descended, you will have to walk up again! Luckily, it is not a long hike (around 20-30 minutes, one way) and totally worth it.

Tips for the hike to Saint Stephen’s Chapel

  • Wear proper shoes: the track is rocky and sometimes steep; flip-flops are a no-go!
  • Go early or late in the day to avoid the hottest hours. Be careful if you go for sunset, as it will be harder to walk back up in the dark.
  • Bring water and maybe a snack: there are no shops, cafés, or vending machines in hidden sea caves (yet). If you hike during the summertime, make sure to bring lots of water!
  • Don’t forget your camera or phone: you’ll want to capture this one, trust me!
  • Be respectful: it’s still a place of worship, not just a cool Instagram backdrop.

Take a boat tour to Agios Stefanos

Taking a boat tour to Agios Stefanos Chapel is a whole different kind of magic. As you glide across the turquoise waters, the landscape of Syros rises around you, and suddenly, tucked into the stone like a secret, you will spot the tiny white chapel under its cave.

Your captain (or you, if you have rented a boat yourself) will dock by the chapel, where you can have a swim. Walk up the stairs to go inside, ring the bell outside, and enjoy the views.

And if you time it just right and go around sunset, the whole place turns golden. The light hits the cliffs, the sea sparkles like it’s been sprinkled with fairy dust, and the chapel glows in the warm glow of the setting sun. It’s quiet, surreal, and honestly a little cinematic.

TIP: We booked our boat trip with Spira Cyclades (+30 6977394343) and can highly recommend Captain John (or Giannis), a local and a friend by now, who will make sure your trip is nothing less than perfect. We had the most amazing trip with him, first snorkeling in the crystal-blue waters around Didimi Island, and then arriving at Agios Stefanos around sunset. If you book a tour with him, don’t forget to tell him Explore Syros or Jurgen and Heleen sent you!

Final thoughts: Agios Stefanos is a little piece of Syros magic

Visiting Agios Stefanos Chapel feels like discovering a secret. It’s not the easiest place to reach, but that’s what makes it so special. You won’t find crowds, souvenirs, or guided tours here, just a quiet, sacred space carved into the rocks, overlooking the endless blue.

And in a world that often feels too loud, that kind of peace is the real hidden treasure. So if you are planning a trip to Syros and love to discover hidden gems, definitely put a hike or boat tour to this cave on your Syros bucket list!
