If you’ve ever dreamed of diving straight off a sun-drenched stone pier into sparkling turquoise water, with pastel neoclassical houses on the cliffs above, then Asteria Beach in Syros is calling your name!
During the many months we spent living in Ermoupoli, on the magical Greek island of Syros, coming to Asteria Beach quickly became one of our favorite things to do in Syros and spots to unwind. It’s not your typical sandy beach like some of the other beaches in Syros, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
And let’s talk about the view for a second, because standing on Asteria Beach and looking up at Agios Nikolaos Church (Saint Nicholas) is something straight out of a postcard.
The church’s elegant neoclassical architecture, majestic pillars, and iconic blue dome perched above the sea make for a picture-perfect backdrop, and one of Syros’ most iconic views. Don’t forget your camera, you’ll want to capture this moment from every angle!

Where is Asteria Beach?
Asteria Beach lies right in the Vaporia district of Ermoupoli, Syros’ elegant capital. Vaporia is hands-down one of the most beautiful neighborhoods on the island: think grand mansions with colorful shutters, balconies overlooking the Aegean, and tiny alleyways full of charm.

The beach itself is actually a series of stone platforms and steps carved into the rocks, with one tiny sandy stretch on the side. Locals spread out their towels on the stone, lie back with a book, and jump in the sea for a refreshing dip whenever it gets too hot.
No sand between your toes, but lots of character and crystal-clear water to make up for it.
TIP: If you are looking for the sandy beach experience, then Azolimnos Beach is the closest to Ermoupoli. Some of our other favorite Syros beaches lie on the other side of the island, though, and in the remote northern part.

How to get to Asteria Beach
It’s super easy to reach Asteria Beach, especially if you’re staying in Ermoupoli. From Miaouli Square, the heart of town, it’s just a 10-minute walk through the old town toward Vaporia (check our free Ermoupoli walking tour for a nice stroll around town).
You’ll see photogenic alleyways and peek into courtyards until you spot Agios Nikolaos Church. Once you pass the church, take the stairwell down to Asteria Beach (under the arch).

On the other side of Asteria Beach, there is another stairwell you can use to get down, taking you to the end (where Ciel Bar Syros is).
No need to hire a car, no long hikes, just an easy stroll, and you’re there.
TIP: If you have a hard time with stairs, be aware that you will have to walk up quite a few to get back to the road.

What to do at Asteria Beach: swim, sun, and chill like a local
Asteria Beach is the kind of place where time slows down. Even during winter, you will see locals swimming in the somewhat colder water or people enjoying the winter sun. But the best time to come is definitely during the warmer months (from April to October), when it’s very much alive and everything is open.
TIP: Asteria Beach faces the south and is protected from the northern winds. The conditions can differ a lot, though. Some days the water is flat, other days, the waves crash upon the shore, making it hard(er) to swim and sit on the platform.
Come here in the early morning, when it is perfect for yoga or an early swim. Later in the day, it gets livelier with locals and travelers taking turns diving into the deep blue.

We spent entire afternoons lounging, swimming, and watching the world go by. It never got boring. The view alone is worth it.
Here’s what you have to do while you’re there:
- Swim like a local: if you are wondering where to swim in Ermoupoli, then Asteria Beach is your answer. Although there are a couple of other spots in town, this one is our favorite. I mean, you can’t beat the setting, and it is also where the locals come! Come early or later in the evening to avoid the crowds. There are also showers to rinse off the salty water.
- Sunbathe on the platform or the rocks: just bring a towel or yoga mat and soak up the sun. During the high season, you can also use one of the sunbeds of Ciel (if you also order drinks and/or food).
- Bring a good book: come here to read your favorite book while listening to the waves.
- Yoga or meditation: the peaceful surroundings are ideal for a mindful moment. Again, to avoid the crowds, come in the early morning.

TIP: Do you want to see Asteria Beach from another angle? Book a boat trip (we can highly recommend our friend John from Spira Authentic Experiences (+30 69773 943 43)) and approach Asteria Beach from the water. A beautiful sight, especially in the evening!

Restaurants and bars at Asteria Beach
As Asteria Beach isn’t big, there are only two options to eat or drink something around the beach, but they are both delicious and some of our favorite restaurants in Syros. Be aware, though, they are only open during the high season (April – October):
- Ciel Bar Syros: a chic seaside café-bar, located right at the end of Asteria Beach, perfect for sunset cocktails with sushi, brunch, or a post-swim smoothie. The prices are a bit upscale, and it has some Mykonos vibes, but the view from the terrace is amazing, and the vibe is relaxed and stylish. They also have sunbeds available for their guests.
- Sta Vaporia: a cozy little taverna halfway up the stairs with a fantastic terrace overlooking the Aegean Sea. Come here to drink a coffee in the morning, or let the friendly staff serve you one of their delicious meals. Their Greek salad hits the spot after a salty swim!

Where to stay around Asteria Beach (Vaporia)
If you want to wake up and be just steps from Asteria Beach, Vaporia is a dream base. There are a few beautiful boutique hotels and guesthouses tucked into this historic district.
There is, of course, the fantastic Artistide Hotel (one of the best small boutique hotels in the world) and Hotel Ploes, another old mansion turned boutique hotel with unbeatable views and direct sea access.
But also the Argini Hotel, Apollonion Palace, and Xenos Apollonos Hotel have the same luxurious and beautiful interiors, a romantic atmosphere, and are close to the water.
If you are looking for an apartment, the Seaside Serenade 2 Suite, Floris Manor, and Fouli Syros Apartment are great options!
We stayed just up the hill from Vaporia and loved walking down to Asteria Beach for a morning dip before breakfast. Highly recommend staying in this area if you’re visiting Syros.

Final thoughts on Asteria Beach
Asteria Beach may not have soft sand or beach umbrellas, but that’s exactly the charm. It’s authentic, local, scenic, and oh-so-relaxing.
Whether you’re diving into the sea, sipping a freddo espresso above the cliffs, or just catching up on your favorite book, this little corner of Syros is the perfect mix of adventure and calm.
So next time you’re in Ermoupoli, skip the taxi and wander down to Asteria. Your swimsuit and your soul will thank you.
