The hike to Kastri is one of our favorite things to do in Syros. But what is Kastri? Kastri is a prehistoric settlement and fortified acropolis perched dramatically on a steep hill in the northern part of Syros, overlooking the Aegean Sea. It dates back to the Early Cycladic period II (around the 3rd millennium BC) and served both as a fortified refuge and a living settlement.
Over the years, excavations at Kastri in Syros have uncovered a remarkable graveyard with around 600 tombs, as well as priceless ruins that bear witness to the flourishing development of ceramics, stonework, and metalwork in the region. Many of the artifacts found here are now displayed in the Syros Archaeological Museum, with some pieces on permanent loan at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
If you’re looking for a hike that combines stunning Aegean views with an extraordinary leap back in time, the hike to Kastri is one of the best hikes in Syros, and one that you simply cannot miss.

How to get to Chalandriani, the starting point of the hike to Kastri
To reach Chalandriani, you’ll need to get to the northern part, also known as Apano Meria, of the island. You have a few options:
- Rent a car or scooter — the easiest and most flexible option, especially for exploring Apano Meria more broadly
- Take a taxi from Ermoupoli — a comfortable and straightforward option if you don’t want to drive.
The hike to Kastri
The most popular way to hike to Kastri starts from Chalandriani, a small village in the northern part of Syros. Chalandriani itself is an important archaeological site — excavations here in the late 19th century by archaeologist Christos Tsountas yielded some of the most significant Early Cycladic finds in the entire island group.
From Chalandriani, the trail crosses the sloping field dotted with ancient Cycladic tombs, before ascending the steep slope of Kastri hill to reach the acropolis. The route is rather steep but not extremely difficult, and the round trip is approximately 6 km.

Here’s a quick overview of the trail:
- Starting point: Chalandriani village, northern Syros (Apano Meria)
- Distance: ~6 km (round trip), or ~3 km one way
- Duration: Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 3 hours, depending on pace and stops
- Difficulty: Moderately challenging — steep and rocky in places, with no shade
- Trail marking: Roughly sign-posted; download Alltrails or Maps.me before you go

The trail doesn’t disappoint at any point. As you leave Chalandriani and begin ascending, panoramic views over the northern Aegean open up around you — on a clear day, you can see all the way to Tinos and Andros. As you gain elevation, the rugged, thyme-scented landscape feels almost untouched, with dry stone walls lining the path and small chapels dotting the hillsides.
At the summit, the strategic genius of Kastri becomes immediately clear. No invader could have scaled this hill undetected, and from the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views over the Aegean Sea and inland across the island. Take your time exploring the stone foundations, the remnants of the fortification walls, and the narrow stepped pathways between the ancient houses — it truly feels like you’re standing at the edge of history.

Extra: Glysoura Beach
One of the best-kept secrets of this hike to Kastri is the option to take a detour down to Glysoura Beach, a completely remote pebble cove accessible only by foot or boat. This pristine stretch of coastline is where, thousands of years ago, pirates and invaders would have attempted to land before the long climb to Kastri. It’s a nice spot for a picnic, a swim in clear turquoise water, and a well-earned rest. Glysoura is not the most beautiful beach of Syros but it’s worth the detour. The best beaches of Syros are on the west side of the island.

What is the best time to hike to Kastri
The ideal seasons for this hike are early spring (April to May) and early autumn (mid-September to October). During these months, the weather is mild, the wildflowers are in bloom, and the trails are quiet. Spring is especially magical — the landscape is green and lush after the winter rains, and the light over the Aegean is soft and golden.
In summer, the hike is still doable but challenging. The trail has absolutely no shade, so if you go in July or August, start very early in the morning and bring extra water. In winter, it can be cold and windy, but the hike is still rewarding on a clear day. Be careful when it has been raining, the rocks can be slippery. Don’t go hiking if it rains, you will have no views and it could be dangerous to fall.

Essential tips before you start hiking in Syros
Here are a few things you need to know before you head out for a Syros hike:
- Always wear appropriate footwear: Don’t underestimate this hike — while it’s moderately graded, the rocky terrain and lack of shade make preparation essential. Wear sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes, flip-flops are absolutely not suitable for the loose stones and steep sections.
- Bring enough water: Bring plenty of water since there are no shops or water sources anywhere along the trail, and pack snacks or a full lunch if you’re planning to linger at Glysoura Beach. The sun reflects hard off the white rocks and the sea, so sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are non-negotiable.
- Wear clothes that fit the season: in summer, make sure you have a hat and sunglasses with you to protect yourself from the sun. In winter, wear enough layers as the wind can be very cold, but if you are hiking up a steep hill, you’ll also want to lose a couple of layers.
- Navigation: Download a navigation app like AllTrails or Maps.me before you leave, as the trail markings are only rough in places and you don’t want to lose the path on the way back down.
- Respect nature: stay on designated paths, avoid disturbing wildlife, and carry out all trash.
