If you want to understand why Syros feels different from so many other Cycladic islands, start in Vaporia. This is the district that travelers remember long after they leave, because it combines history, architecture, sea views, and everyday island life in a way that feels almost cinematic.
Vaporia is often described as the most beautiful quarter of Syros, and once you walk through it, that claim feels hard to argue with.

How did the Vaporia district originate?
Vaporia lies north of the harbor, on the eastern side of Ermoupolis, and it developed as the aristocratic district of the 19th century. This was where the wealthy shipowners, captains, merchants, and industrialists built their homes after the rise of Ermoupolis as a major commercial port.
The houses were positioned close to the sea, and in many cases they seem to hang above the rocks, which gives the district its unforgettable character.
The name itself is tied to the image of ships and maritime wealth, which is fitting for a neighborhood that grew out of Syros’s shipping success. Today, Vaporia still feels elegant and slightly aristocratic, but it is also very alive. Vaporia is now a place where history is not locked behind museum glass, but woven into the city’s daily rhythm.
It is, therefore, one of our favorite neighborhoods in Ermoupolis.

The houses and mansions
The architecture is the main reason you have to visit Vaporia. Vaporia’s mansions are some of the finest examples of urban neoclassical design in the Cyclades, with high ceilings, frescoes, marble balconies, wooden floors, and carved doors.
The first time we visited Syros, we were truly impressed by these beautiful houses, it is something you wouldn’t expect to find on one of the Cycladic islands.
Many of these homes were built by families who arrived on Syros as refugees in the wake of the Greek Revolution, and their houses became symbols of success, memory, and ambition.
What makes the district especially interesting for visitors is that not all of the buildings are in perfect condition. Some have been beautifully restored, while others still need renovation, which gives the area a sense of authenticity and urgency rather than polished perfection. That contrast is part of its charm, you can admire the grandeur of the past while also seeing how much care is still needed to preserve it.
If you enjoy architecture, Vaporia is one of those places where you can spend a long time simply looking up. The details are everywhere — shutters, ironwork, stone facades, long terraces, and sea-facing windows that once signaled wealth and power.
A neighborhood with history and the famous Church of Agios Nikolaos
Vaporia was not built randomly. It became the prestigious quarter of Ermoupolis in the 19th century, when the city was at the height of its commercial importance. The richest families of Syros lived here, and the district reflected the confidence of a port city that had become one of Greece’s great economic centers.
One of the most notable landmarks in the area and probably on most of the pictures of Ermoupoli is the Church of Agios Nikolaos, often called the church of the “rich” because of its grandeur and social importance.
The church’s graceful neoclassical design, with its soaring pillars and striking blue dome overlooking the sea, creates one of Syros’ most unforgettable views. Framed by the harbor and the light of the Aegean, it is a scene that feels almost made for photography, so be sure to bring your camera and take in the view from different angles.
For travelers, this means Vaporia is not only a scenic walk. It is a place where you can actually read the history of the island in the buildings themselves. Every facade tells part of a story about migration, prosperity, and the making of modern Syros.
Asteria Beach right below
One of the most unusual things about Vaporia is that it leads directly to Asteria Beach, the famous urban swimming spot of Ermoupolis. This is not a long sandy beach with rows of umbrellas. Instead, it is a distinctive bathing platform where you can dive into deep, clear water and enjoy views of the district’s mansions and the Church of Agios Nikolaos above you.
During our stay in Syros, Asteria Beach quickly became one of our favorite things to do in Syros and spots to go swim and relax.
You can walk there easily, spend time by the water, have a drink, and still feel connected to the historic fabric of the city. The setting is also what makes Asteria memorable. You are swimming beneath Vaporia, looking up at the neoclassical facades, and that combination of sea and architecture is one of the most distinctive experiences on Syros.
During the summer months, you can go to Ciel bar which is located on the platform. In the weekend they have dj’s playing music. If you like some good sushi, Ciel Bar is a goog option. They also offer sunbeds durings summer.
On the steps leading from Saint Nicholas Church to Asteria, you will find the cozy Astakos with a romantic and authentic vibe. Both are slightly more expensive than the other restaurants in Syros, but the view and location are certainly worth a lot, too.

Other things to do in Vaporia
- Have a coffee at Saint Syros, one of the best coffee bars in Ermoupolis with a view on the blue domed Saint Nicholas Church.
- Visit the Apollo Theater, a miniature version of La Scala in Milan on the border of Miaoulis Square and Vaporia
- Have a look at the Historical Museum of Ermoupolis, a former Mansion House.
- Walk along the coast to the Church of Agios Dimitrios, a beautiful loop with views on the Aegan Sea
TIP: After visiting Vaporia, you can walk from Agios Dimitrios to Ano Syros. It is a strenuous uphill walk, but at least you don’t have to climb any stairs. You can also do it the other way around and finish with a dip at Asteria Beach.
Where to stay around Vaporia
If you want to wake up just steps from Asteria Beach, Vaporia is an ideal base. This elegant historic district is home to a handful of beautiful boutique hotels and guesthouses, many of them set inside restored mansions with sea views and a distinctly romantic atmosphere.
Among the standout options are Artistide Hotel, often praised as one of the finest small boutique stays in the world, and Hotel Ploes, a striking old mansion turned luxury hotel with exceptional views and direct access to the water. You’ll also find stylish stays such as Argini Hotel, Apollonion Palace, and Xenos Apollonos Hotel, all offering refined interiors, charm, and close proximity to the sea.
If you prefer more space and independence, there are also excellent apartment-style stays nearby, including Seaside Serenade 2 Suite, Floris Manor, and Fouli Syros Apartment. These are especially appealing if you want a quieter, more private stay while still being within easy walking distance of Asteria Beach, the harbor, and the atmospheric streets of Vaporia.
